Mindanao is found in the Philippines. It is the second largest major island. It is situated in the southern end from Archipelago. The island has five main peninsulas and five mountain ranges of some volcanic origin. The area has a number of minerals ranging from limestone, copper, silver, iron, nickel, gold, and coal. The island also produces farm products such as coffee, pineapple, copra, corn cacao and abaca (hemp).
The locals consist of The T’boli and B’laan which are the two indigenous groups. The other groups are the Ata, Bagobo, Banwaon, Bukidnon, Dibabawon, Higaunon, Kalagan, Mamanwa, Mandaya, Mangguwangan, Manobo, Mansaka, Subanen, Tagakaolo, Teduray and the Ubo. A collective name for the 18 groups in Mindanao is “Lumad” which means “indigenous”. One dominant characteristic of these groups is the fact that they live in a traditional way compared to the way their ancestors lived. Their cultural heritage is visible in their clothes and ornaments they put on. Their lives are very traditional, this is evident in the economic activities, housing, religion and cultural habits.
The T’boli group occupies the southern province of Cotabata around Lake Sebu. They normally practiced traditional way of agriculture, slash and burn. Yams, cassava, and rice were their major agricultural products. Apart from that they also practiced fishing and hunting.
More than 95 percent of people living in the Mindanao are still practicing the traditional Animistic Religion despite the influence of Islam which has spread on the island. They also were not influenced by Christianity during the Spanish colonial period. Very few people are Christians or Muslims. They have a strong believe in the existence of spirits and gods. They believe in several gods and each god has a specific dominion or power over something. The ‘upper god’ named Magbabaya is the creator of life, and the ‘lower gods’ each having power over a particular part of the environment.
